Contemporary Korean Novels and Pen Pals : Focusing on New Dynamics of Forming Relationships

Abstract

This study culturally and historically examines the process of forming new relationships and intimacy as depicted in the "pen pal" narratives of modern Korean novels from the 1960s to the 1990s. Breaking away from the surveillance of traditional familism and regionalism (blood ties, regional ties, and school ties), the pen pal phenomenon functioned as a unique social format for experimenting with symmetrical and anonymous interactions with strangers. Based on Georg Simmel's concepts of the stranger and dyad, as well as Anthony Giddens' notion of pure relationships, an analysis of works by Eun Hee-kyung, Oh Jung-hee, and Park Tae-soon reveals that pen pals automatically acquired the grammar of romantic love due to the absence of the physical body, providing youth with opportunities for growth and liberation.

However, the non-face-to-face nature of letters led to a complex interplay of understanding and misunderstanding, forcing characters to form self-reflective relationships that projected fantasies onto one another. This fantasy easily collapsed in the face of actual encounters, which is problematic as it mirrors the gap between expectation and reality found in modern online dating analyzed by Eva Illouz. Furthermore, as seen in Park Tae-soon's fiction, the pen pal practice gradually fused with the logic of capital, showing a pattern of being subsumed into commercialized dating business models similar to modern online dating apps or matchmaking agencies. In conclusion, while Korea's pen pal culture possessed the emancipatory potential of pure relationships lacking any external anchoring points, it simultaneously demonstrated structural limitations by being re-absorbed content-wise into existing gender hierarchies and the capitalist marriage market. Thus, it serves as a major cultural apparatus reflecting the distinct characteristics of modern Korean society.
