Abstract

The relationship between fiction and film is often understood through the model of adaptation, which assumes a completed literary original and its subsequent cinematic transformation. Yi Ch’ŏngjun’s Festival (1996), however, emerged alongside Im Kwon-taek’s film of the same title through a process of concurrent planning, production, and sustained exchange between novelist and filmmaker. Both works draw on Yi’s experience of his mother’s death and funeral, while the seven letters addressed to the director and incorporated into the novel record negotiations over how this shared event should be selected, fictionalized, distributed, and concluded across two different media.

This article argues that the letters are not merely extratextual records of authorial intention but narrative devices that participate in the formation of the novel’s plot. The first three letters establish the principles of plotting through medial differentiation and the introduction of fictionality, while the remaining four regulate the ethical costs of representation, distribute narrative materials between fiction and film, and differentiate their thematic and formal closures. Through this process, Festival internalizes the conditions of its own production and develops a novelistic order distinct from the film.

The relationship between the two works is therefore best understood as genetic intermediality: a mode of simultaneous creation in which fiction and film acquire their respective plots, forms, and medial specificities through mutual negotiation. In this sense, Festival constitutes an important case of modern Korean fiction that transforms the process of its own genesis into a principle of narrative form.
