Abstract
This study examines Garam Yi Byeong-gi’s collation of Garujigi-taryeong (1949) and reconsiders Shin Jae-hyo’s place in the prehistory of modern Korean fiction. Yi defined pansori texts as geukga, a form combining lyrical, narrative, and dramatic properties, and observed that Shin’s revised texts could be “stiff” in performance yet valuable as independent literary works. Drawing on Bakhtin’s concept of novelization, McHale’s distinction between narrativity and segmentivity, and Jo Dong-il’s theory of surface and hidden themes, the study argues that Garujigi-taryeong retains verse and performative segmentation while reorganizing them under an irreversible narrative sequence. Its nonheroic popular protagonist, direct contact with nineteenth-century realities, heteroglot social languages, and unresolved tragic ending create a depth distinct from the restorative endings of other pansori works. Byeon Gang-soe, a representative of vital popular energy, dies without resurrection, compensation, or reunion, and is doubled by the jangseung through the repeated forms and places of death; the collective punishment imposed by the nationwide jangseung figures the settled popular order destroying its own wandering double. The monologue on muwi ihwa (transformation without deliberate action), a core idea of Donghak, is further read as covertly embedding the popular desire for “renewed creation” (dasi gaebyeok): on the surface it rationalizes his refusal of labor, while at the hidden level it criticizes a world of labor, poverty, epidemic, and death and longs for a radically new order. This concealment of a prohibited aspiration in the contradictory voice of a comic and abject character, together with the doppelgänger structure, deepens the work’s novelistic quality. The work is therefore defined as a “novelized geukga,” the most radical experiment in novelization within Shin’s pansori texts. Shin should accordingly be reassessed as an experimental pioneer of pansori’s novelization, while Yi’s collation recovered this formal prehistory before the institutional emergence of sinsoseol associated with Yi In-jik and Yi Hae-jo.
