The Division of the ‘colonized subject’ and ‘Stuttering’ : A Rereading of Kim Hak-young’s ‘The Frozen Mouth’

Abstract

This study aims to reexamine Kim Hak-young’s “The Frozen Mouth” from the perspective of the “colonized subject” formed in the process of transition from the imperial-colonial system to the nation-state system. To date, “The Frozen Mouth” has primarily been discussed in terms of the national identity and diasporic experiences of Koreans in Japan, while the protagonist’s stuttering has likewise been understood as a device representing linguistic deficiency or identity confusion. Such interpretations, however, do not sufficiently account for the fissures that the experience of colonialism leaves in the subject’s unconscious and the resulting failure of self-identity. Accordingly, this study analyzes “The Frozen Mouth” based on Han Soo-young’s concept of the “colonized subject” and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. It reads the recurring motifs of stuttering and Moses, the protagonist’s research activities, and his relationship with Michiko as narrative devices that reveal the division of the colonized subject, and demonstrates that stuttering is not merely a linguistic defect but a symptom of the colonized subject’s inability to become fully integrated into the symbolic order. Furthermore, this study argues that the recurring narrative of failure throughout the work results from the inscription of the experience of colonialism in the subject’s unconscious, revealing a process in which attempts to attain self-identity ultimately become frustrated. Ultimately, by reading “The Frozen Mouth” as a text that represents the traces left by the experience of colonialism in the subject’s unconscious, this study seeks to offer a new understanding of Kim Hak-young’s literature beyond the question of national identity, focusing instead on the formation of the colonized subject and the failure of self-identity.
