Abstract
This article examines the significance of the literary space that emerged in The Deep-Rooted Tree, a general-interest monthly in which critics active in major literary quarterlies of 1970s Korea—including Creation and Criticism, Literature and Intellect, and World Literature—came to coexist. The Deep-Rooted Tree sought to present a comprehensive view of the contemporary intellectual world by drawing contributors from a wide range of academic disciplines. When opinions diverged, the magazine maintained an editorial principle of presenting both sides rather than lending weight to either, leaving judgment to its readers. The editors described this principle through the metaphor of a balance scale.
While the editorial staff exercised broad authority over articles in general, it refrained from editorial intervention in literary works, criticism, and book reviews. This article argues that this mode of operation, in which intervention and nonintervention were applied differently according to the character of each section, enabled divergent conceptions of literature to coexist. In particular, the fact that Kim Uchang and Kim Hyeon, who respectively represented the intellectual orientations of World Literature and Literature and Intellect, successively served as editorial board members responsible for literature indicates that the magazine’s literary pages were not the preserve of any single literary camp. Nor was it rare for critics from one camp to evaluate works associated with another in the book-review section.
The magazine also provided space for issues that cannot be reduced to the divisions among the major literary camps of the period. Writings on women’s issues, Park Wanseo’s prose, and Cho Sehui’s experimental one-page fiction (Hanppyeom Soseol) demonstrate that issues extending beyond the existing structure of literary camps also occupied a place in the magazine.
On the basis of this examination, this article conceptualizes The Deep-Rooted Tree as a literary public sphere. It argues that the magazine’s position as a general-interest cultural magazine, in which literature occupied a relatively peripheral place, in fact provided the basis for bringing diverse literary forces together on the same pages. In doing so, this article supplements the conventional account of the literary landscape of the 1970s as structured primarily by rivalry among the major quarterlies and seeks to restore another site in which contemporary writers and critics experienced coexistence alongside competition.
